A vacuum to deal with pet hair?

Over at the Netmums Forum where mothers swap advice on all things domestic, lorraine s has asked if anyone can recommend a vacuum cleaner that can deal with pet hair particularly on wooden floors.

She reports that her current vacuum, an Electrolux Velocity, isn’t picking up the hair of their new German Shepherd and she’s looking to get a decent vacuum “before the kids get buried in dog hairs!” Julia S suggests a Dyson, but Cath H comes forward to report that “We splashed out on a Miele cat and dog” and “can’t praise it enough”. She’s questioned by Katherine B, who asks how good it is on hard floors and carpet and the range of tools it comes with.
