New washing machine advice
Like Fool.co.uk, Overclockers UK is another community full of worldly-wise heads whose recommendations among its members are given with the up-most consideration of the facts.
This has been demonstrated once again by the suggestions given to malc30 in his pursuit of a new washing machine. While the eminently quotable Which? is again touted as a good starting point, the recommendations for particular brands come in thick and fast: Bosch, Gorenje, Hotpoint, Whirlpool and Zanussi all have their advocates, but the debate ultimately revolves around the false economy of buying a cheaper machine.
Jez is the first to sing Miele’s praises citing his girlfriend’s parent’s twenty year-old Miele which according to them “has never had to even be looked at…thats with a family of 7, since new”, while Ninjabib describes Miele as “the Rolls Royce of the white goods industry. If you can stretch to one get one, think they all come with 10 yrs full guarantee as standard if i remember rightly”
This last point turns the conversation to the issue of guarantees and extended warranties, which as always, makes interesting reading. Jump over to the forum and have your say.
Eleven years and time to say goodbye?
According to Cariad from UK Parents Lounge, it’s over. It seems her long-lasting love affair with her Zanussi washing machine is coming to an end as it’s making “a godawful noise on its final spin”. Here’s hoping it rusts in peace.
However, helpful as ever, the good denizens of said forum have already got involved keen to offer suggestions of what she should go for, should the inevitable happen. “At the risk of embarrassingly repeating myself as I always do on any washing machine threads – I would highly recommend a Miele” says Caroline J – while yorkshire lass offers some more Miele related comfort for Cariad. “My Zanussi lasted 9 years for a family of six, we got a Miele and that is just as good with how much use it gets.”
Lozenge does offer a word of warning suggesting that he has “a Miele but I think it is heavy on the clothes” and while plopcar gives Miele the thumbs-up he’s less than complimentary about a certain other brand.

Noisy washing machines need not apply
When it comes to buying a new washer JackieDenham doesn’t want just any old thing. She wants a machine that’ll provide a cold wash for her “kids’ trendy tops” and handwash programme to boot, so she’s asked her fellow Weight Watchers for their suggestions for their favourite machine.
Unusually the recommendations aren’t the usual ‘avoid-at-all-cost’ comments, but each correspondent advocates their own particular machine as the ideal replacement: Servis, Indesit, Zanussi, Hotpoint and even the old twintubs of yore all have their fans, that Jackie is suprised by the lack of negativity.
However, it boils down to Bosch owner Anje who “bought it cos miele were out of stock – but hate it cos its bloody noisy!” to remind Jackie that there’s nothing worse than the racket from a washing machine at full spin. So much so that Jackie concludes with: “Thanks Anje that could be vital information cos DH was looking at that make this morning. Don’t want a noisy one!!”

Dishwasher recommendations
Over at Money Saving Expert, dishwasher recommendations are the order of the day as littleminx has finally decided to bite the bullet and buy one. Initially put off by the scratches she’s seen on friends glassware she’s changed her mind after talking to her sister-in-law and would like advice on the best one to go for.
Gangstabird was going to buy a Miele, but learned the hard way that inexpensive machines are a false economy and vows to “…never EVER buy a cheap machine again”, while MrsE has been so impressed by Miele’s unique cutlery tray in her friends machine, that she’s earmarked her next machine as a Miele too.
However it’s HC, owner of a G1220, who speaks from experience and “definitely recommends” buying a Miele as they’ve got “a good reputation for quality and durability” also describing the cutlery tray as “brilliant”. She advises littlemix that “even an entry-level [G1022] one will be good” even with the traditional basket.

Suggestions for a new dishwasher
Aside from the tongue-in-cheek suggestions about the ‘other-half’ being the best dishwasher, fancy*footwork over at the eBay UK Forums would like recommendations for a new dishwasher as the repairman has declared her current machine kaput.
She’s looking for something built-in, about 59.6cm wide and “…not a Smeg!”, so has asked the question: “What do you have, does it work well, and would you buy it again? AEG, Bosch and Siemens are all recommended by furryfur, faeriedak and numptygirl1969 respectively, while ivvie loves her Miele describing it bashfully as “…A+ rated and very quiet. Clever cos it has sensors to regulate the temperature and water depending on how dirty the dishes are”. She also loves the peace of mind of the standard five-year warranty and “…not the usual one year thingy.”
Again the recommendations from all concerned is to avoid the lesser brand names, as not only are they noiser and appear to clog more easily, they don’t last as long as a prestige brand.
