Dyson: “The be all and end all of bagless vacuuming?”

Posted by Simon  21 July 2008

Over at the hifi and sound system forum Talk Audio, John Dorian is interested in buying a new vacuum and wants to know whether Dyson are really the last word in bagless cleaners.

While several Dyson owners are happy with their machines, the concensus from Talk Audio members is that Dyson are “very flimsy and plasticy” and “the build quality doesn’t seem up to much” especially since moving their manufacturing to the Far East. The Rug Doctor who describes himself as “…in the dust business sort of” uses both a Henry and Karcher in his business, but has a Miele at home describes Dysons as “…crap for rugs/carpets so I have never owned one”.

Even Dyson owner R-P admits that the noise levels of a Miele are “about 20dB less loud than a Dyson” and “the emptying of the cylinder is messy”, but “…we (unconsiously) leave it in the room when we get visitors, something you won’t do with a Miele…”

If you’ve got any suggestions for John on the best bagless cleaner or have a Dyson story to share hop over to the forum and have your say.

Miele: Do they make good washing machines?

Posted by Matt  8 July 2008

Over at the Speaker’s Corner section on the PC Adviser Forum, Diodorus Siculus has asked the immortal question: “Who makes good washing machines?” There are many mentions of Miele from various posters, such as Eow is nighe who writes “You won’t get any better than a ‘MIELE’”.

Stuartli mentions that he used to own a Zanussi washer dryer, but replaced it with a Miele on the advice of a friend and because of the company’s “superb quality and reliability”. He reports on how the Miele was £100 cheaper than the Zanussi cost to buy 13 years ago and how it is now 5 years old, used at least twice a day “and has never missed a beat.” FatboySlim71 agrees, telling how he finds his own Miele washing machine “fabulous”. It’s extremely quiet, even at an 1800 rpm spin and he thinks that “Miele are the Rolls Royce in washing machines”. Stuartli also links to a review of the Miele W864 washing machine previously covered on Forever Better.

Head on over to the thread to read the different opinions and if you have any of your own for Diodorus Siculus, let him know.

Brief encounters - Miele G1222SCi dishwasher review

Posted by Matt  23 June 2008

A new review of the Miele G1222SCi dishwasher has popped up on the Review Centre courtesy of sarahgee12 in which she writes the machine washes “beautifully and consistently”.

Giving the dishwasher an overall score of 9 out of 10, she notes that it’s easy to both set up and use, plus the cutlery tray is a “god send”. She’s also impressed by the low noise levels plus the versatility in which the trays and removable sections for pans can be used.

Sarahgee12 concludes that it can be tough buying expensive appliances nowadays, but the Miele G1222SCi “is well worth it”. Head on over to read the full review.

Brief encounters: Miele S571 vacuum cleaner review

Posted by Matt  19 June 2008

Guide for Household Appliances and good friend to Forever Better Nar2 has posted another Miele write-up on Dooyoo, this time an extensive review of Miele S571 vacuum cleaner.

You may recall a previous review of his on the S360 from back in April and this one is no less in-depth. In his latest analysis he writes that second-hand Miele appliances can be difficult to come by as being so durable they should last 20 years or more. Despite being an older model the S571 is very quiet even at its most powerful setting and still compares favourably with more recent appliances.

Dishwashers: Any brand to avoid?

Posted by Matt  17 June 2008

Over at the Damsels Forum there’s a bit of excitement coming from ChelseaHarvey, who reports that she’ll move in to her new abode in less than 17 days.

Part of this excitement comes from the fact that she can now buy herself a dishwasher, something she’s not had the space for previously. A self-admitted “dishwasher virgin”, she isn’t entirely sure what she wants but does know that she needs “a big one not one of those slim line ones”. What she wants to know is are dishwashers much of a muchness, or do some brands stand out among the others?

While Bosch receives a number of recommendations in particular, Booh recommends Miele as “they always come out best on the Which reviews!” and from fifitrix who’s own inbuilt Miele is “…so quiet you wouldn’t know it is on.” ChelseaHarvey is still open to suggestions, so if you’ve had any dishwasher experience, head on over and let her know.

Brief encounters - Miele W1512 washing machine review

Posted by Matt  16 June 2008

Chrismccarthy has posted his thoughts on his new Miele W1512 washing machine over at Review Centre, which replaced his old Zanussi when it broke down after only four years “with a PCB fault”.

Giving the W1512 a very positive review with an overall score of 9 out of 10, Chris explains how he chose to replace the departed appliance with a Miele W1512 in the hope that it would “last up to 20 years as they claim”. As well as being more durable, Chris mentions that the W1512 has “faster washes than my old Zanussi”; a typical wash taking 100 minutes. Other good points include its “very quiet operation”, plus a ‘time remaining’ display which tells you exactly how long each wash will take.

Chris concludes by reporting how he extended the 2 year parts and labour warranty to 6 years for a mere 30 euros. You can read the full review here.

Fed up with vacuum cleaners

Posted by Simon  11 June 2008

Judging by the judicious use of angry emoticons in her post on vacuum cleaners, MoneySavingExpert member mary43 is fed up with the troublesome things. While sprucing up her house for the visit of her one-year old grandson her current vacuum has let her down and having found Dysons too heavy in the past has asked for recommendations for a decent machine to buy.

Meester recommends Miele calling it “…the best brand for suction and reliability” and then gives a full rundown of seven vacuums suitable for mary43’s needs including the Cat & Dog, Revolution 5000, S4581, S4511 and the HEPA 5281. Miele owner LandyAndy is also a fan and describes his as “…very good and, relatively, quiet.” Mary43’s only concern is that she finds upright cleaners easier on her back.

Have you got a tale to tell over a particularly useless vacuum cleaner? What would you recommend to Mary43 in her situation? Have your say in the forum.

Brief encounters - Miele S5210 vacuum cleaner review part 3

Posted by Simon  29 May 2008

In the third installment of the S5210 vacuum review over at the Review Centre ryry87 has written the most comprehensive evaluation to date, following the two earlier reviews provided by kash gadhia and jacqueline2681.

Having now owned an S5210 for over a year Ryry87 gives it the Review Centre ‘thumbs-up’ and a full ten-out-of-ten and highlights the suction, looks, quality, lack of noise and value as killer-features. The only minor niggles being the expense of replacement bags and filters and the length of the hose.

Ryry 87 concludes by describing the S5210 as “…one of the best vacuums I have ever tested…the build quality and 20-year reliability is better than Hoover or Dyson could ever dream of…”.

Recommend me a dishwasher

Posted by Simon  27 May 2008

Money Saving Expert member I,M SAD is looking for a new dishwasher for their family of four. While they’ve got their heart set on a Miele machine they’ve also asked for other suggestions.

The only respondent thus far is Windym, the proud owner of a G1230SC which fits the requirements of a full-size, stainless steel machine. She describes it as “…amazingly quiet, efficient and very very good at cleaning dishes…”, but above all loves the cutlery tray which “…cleans beautifully…” and gives “…extra space on the bottom rack.” While she admits you pay more for Miele in the short term you can expect them to last for twenty years.

If you’ve any recommendations for the ideal dishwasher, jump over to the forum and have your say.

Dyson: No longer the cat’s whiskers on pet hair

Posted by Simon  25 April 2008

gk172, a member of Money Saving Expert has finally tired of her Dysons. After having bought three in a row including an DC07 which she described as “…good but a little fragile” and an DC14 which “…didn’t seem to have the power of the DC07″ she’s recently bought a Vax Mach 6 which also falls short of her expectations.

Her dilemma is whether to keep the Vax or go for another brand, so she’s opened the floor to suggestions from fellow money savers on what to buy next. While several debate the pros and cons of the Henry range of cleaners, Sharon59 highly recommends going for the Cat & Dog. After replacing her useless Hoover upright with it she describes it as “…nice and quiet ” and has really noticed the difference it makes.

What are your suggestions for the best pet hair vacuum? Are there any breeds you find defeat the best cleaners around? Have your say in the forum.
